The Umarex Glock 17 Gen 4 is a CO2 powered BB pistol replica of the iconic Austrian pistol used as a service pistol by military and police departments around the world. With the feel and nearly identical weight of the pistol version plus a blowback function, this semi-automatic BB gun distributed by Umarex allows shooters to get plenty of trigger time at a fraction of the cost of firing a pistol.

The Glock 17 Gen 4 C02-powered BB gun is an easy-to-operate gun that's fun for casual plinking. Essentially, it's a more than serviceable practice pistol for Glock 17 Gen 4 firearm owners looking for an inexpensive way to gain trigger time. Whether shooting at static targets, moving through ranges or doing reloading drills, the Gen 4 BB gun is a great practice tool.

A 12-gram CO2 cartridge (loaded in a detachable magazine) propels BBs downward while performing a blowback function. Loading the C02 cartridge requires removing the protective plastic floor plate cover from the bottom of the magazine and unscrewing the cap with a ¼-inch Allen wrench. Tightening the cap is difficult because the bottom of the magazine is not parallel with the threads. When it is hard enough, the tip of the cartridge is punctured and ready for use. A single cartridge will get the shooter through three magazines before the gun loses power. Umarex recommends storing the gun without a cartridge.

The metal drop-out magazine holds 18 BBs, which are loaded into a small port at the front of the magazine. BBs are pushed to the top of the magazine by a "follower" and driven by a spring that is compressed and locked to load. To compress the spring you need to press the small tab and lock it by pushing the tab into the small notch. For this you need a good nail or a tool like a mini screwdriver or a pen. I usually choose a screwdriver. Loading BBs at once is a bit difficult for those with large (or clumsy) fingers who prefer to use the small funnel to drop the BBs into the magazine.

Along with a trigger safety system that mimics Glock firearm pistols, the Glock 17 Gen 4 BB pistol features a safety at the bottom of the polymer pistol frame in front of the trigger guard. It's sticky and not really convenient to use while recording. But since the trigger safety is functional, it's not really necessary. It makes more sense to use when changing magazines and/or C02 cartridges. The gun must be cocked (with the slide) before the safety can be used.

The magazine release is on the left side of the handle, just like on the gun. A frame above the trigger has a zipper handle.

I tested the Glock 17 Gen 4 BB gun by blowing through dozens of C02 cartridges while sending hundreds of steel BBs down on targets out to 20 yards. The blowback function is fast, and while it doesn't come close to replicating the recoil of the flamethrower version of this gun, it certainly adds a layer of realism. The gun fires with a pronounced pop (think nail gun, but a little quieter), but it's definitely backyard-friendly.

"Fun" is the first word that comes to mind about the shooting experience of the Glock 17 Gen 4 BB pistol. "Realistic" is the second. This air gun is a hot rod and a great learning tool for firearms enthusiasts looking for a quiet and inexpensive shooting experience.

Accuracy isn't great, which isn't surprising considering we're talking about a 3.6-inch smoothbore here. At 10 yards and with the new C02 cartridge, the Glock 17 Gen 4 BB pistol shoots 5- to 8-inch diameter groups, with occasional flyers.

Both of my test pistols shot consistently low, a known characteristic of the Glock 17 Gen 4 BB pistol. Because scenes are fixed, adjusting to a place of less impact requires replacing or repositioning your scene image. Another option is to install a laser sight using a rail on the frame in front of the trigger guard. But again, this gun isn't exactly accurate.

Glock 17 Gen 5 Review

The size and feel of this replica is identical to the real gun, including the grip design and finish. So the favorite holster you use for your Glock 17 will work for the BB version as well. I had both the BB version and the gun version at a range session and we were amazed at how similar they were.

Weight is very comparable. At 27.9 ounces loaded, this is four ounces less than a gun with a full 17-round magazine. It's a difference that experienced shooters will notice, but it's close enough with practice work.

The main difference between the Glock 17 Gen 4 air pistol and the firearm version is magazine weight. The BB version is heavier to help account for the lighter frame and slide. Reloading practice is still possible (and effective) because the magazines are shaped the same and the magazine release on the BB gun works like the firearm version. Do not perform exercises on hard surfaces or you risk damaging the magazine.

Although it's strictly advised not to drop the magazine on a hard surface, the magazine on the gun we've shot quite often encountered a small chip on the plastic where the BBs are fed into the barrel. That led to some jamming. This is covered by Umarex under warranty. Fortunately, since we have both pistols, we were able to use the remaining magazine to complete our test. Additional magazines cost $49.99.

The Gen4 Glock

The Glock 17 Gen 4 CO2 pistol from Umarex is a fun rod, and it excels as a stand-in for an economical training gun. A container of 1,500 BBs costs about $7, which is less than half a penny a pop. BB. A C02 cartridge costs about 75 cents (less if you buy in bulk, you buy). It costs less than a dollar to shoot three magazines through the BB version of this gun. A round of 9mm ammo costs 50 cents. A large, multi-round gun costs about $30.

If accuracy is a must, this is not the gun for you. It's good for low-key plinking, practicing trigger timing and reloading drills. The truth is, it would be nice to be closer to the gun version in terms of accuracy (at least at close range), but that certainly isn't a priority for most shooters considering the Glock 17 Gen 4 CO2-powered BB-pistol.

The Glock 17 Gen 4 BB pistol was primarily designed as a cheap and (relatively) quiet stand-in for the firearm version. It's also fun for casual shooting, but you have to be okay with erratic accuracy.

Southern Oregon native Mark Taylor wrote his first outdoor story at age 13 when he discovered his English teacher would accept stories about his fishing and hunting for essay assignments. A little more than a decade later, after a four-year stint as a naval officer stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, he took up writing and editing as a career and has been at it for nearly 30 years now. Although the polymer striker fired pistol concept did not originate with Glock, they were the company that brought it into the mainstream with great success. Since then, they have ascribed a design philosophy of "evolution, not revolution". Each new generation has minor changes and tweaks, but the core concept remains the same. I was recently issued a new Glock 17M by my department. The 17M is the latest iteration of the very successful duty size 9mm Glock and is identical to the commercial version of the pistol – the Glock 17 Gen 5. While Glock has stuck to their design philosophy, the changes they've made are not just actual improvements and cosmetic changes.

Holster Review: T.rex Arms Ragnarok (glock 17

Before I go any further, I should share a brief history of my involvement with Glocks. Prior to LEO training, I had never held a polymer gun, let alone fired one. In the military, the only gun I used was a Beretta M9. As a pie-eating citizen during the Clinton Assault Weapon Ban years – when magazines with more than 10 rounds became…expensive – I carried a 1911 or a revolver, but the 1911 was the platform I had the most experience with. Next came the police academy where I was issued a Gen 2 Glock 22 with a NY-1 trigger. It was so gritty and oddly stacked that I felt there was something wrong inside the gun and I had the trouble of telling an instructor that I thought my gun needed maintenance. he took,
