Mugu Rock is a distinctive coastal promontory seen in many films and TV commercials. This igneous dike marks the west d of the Santa Monica Mountains and the border of Rancho Guadalasca. The rock was formed when a road was cut through a nearly vertical hill of resistant volcanic rock in 1937. In 1923-1924 a road was blown around the promontory to complete the Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu and Oxnard Plain. This replaced a narrow road around the cliff and most of the road has been washed away.

This area is a popular but dangerous place for fishing, sightseeing, cliff diving and rock climbing along the steep rock wall.

And as you struggle up the climb, let your mind wander by thinking about the trail you're on, used by the indigenous Chumash people for over 7,000 years. The Mugu Peak Trail is fun and rewarding.
