Not like them (I don't like the h*** word - there are too many of them in the world today). The world is divided when it comes to this company's weapons. Few shooters will only buy a Glock. Others won't buy it if it's the only gun in the store.

Why the division? I've seen this situation before in some other Glock reviews, links below. Suffice it to say that some people place great value on Gaston's famous gun, while others do not. They feel

For some with small hands. They are too simple for others. There is no thumb safety for other shooters. Some even say they are too expensive.

However, if you're on the other side of the track, it's just the best all-around gun. There isn't too much gray area with this gun. However, one thing we can all agree on is that the M43 is a great little concealable pistol.

Glock is an Austrian company that has grown from a small manufacturer of household goods into one of the largest manufacturers of handguns in the world. An estimated 65% of US law enforcement agencies use Glock pistols and their share in the world is incalculable.

The Glock 43 9mm pistol took the shooting world somewhat by surprise when it appeared in April 2015. Bold and loud by Glock, this was the first single-shot 9mm the company made. Demand for such a gun is high among glocophiles. Much to my chagrin, if I recall correctly, Glock introduced the M42 .380 before the 9mm version was introduced.

In any case, it's a good seller and remains so for today, although I guess the double stack 43Xs cut into sales a bit. Many people prefer to have 10 rounds in the 43X uniform magazine instead of the standard 43 6 rounds, given the choice, even if the grip is a bit larger. At least there is a complete magazine for the 43, one of which is pictured here.

So now we know where the company came from and how Gen 3 guns differ from, say, Gen 4. This is all basic knowledge needed to discuss Glock guns with an understanding of terms, generations, etc. the model of the gun now in front of us? Why did Glock decide to come out with one 9mm subcompact? In a word, demand.

43 was the first service-caliber Glock that could be carried in a trouser pocket. I know a few guys who do this. Weighing 20 ounces or more and only four and a quarter inches tall, it fits into a pocket holster. (Don't just carry a pocket gun in your pocket - it's in a holster).

Another question I get asked from time to time is "which generation is 43?", to which I answer "me". The 43 is technically a Gen 4. but, at a quick glance, it looks like a Gen 5 without the finger grooves. However, there is no Gen 5 ambidextrous slide stop/release and no nDLC finish, but there is a Marksman barrel.

So this was the forerunner of the Gen 5 rifle. It was one of the most popular Glocks that sold a lot. At least my friends who have them are very happy, no matter what generation they are from.

Here are some photos I took of the 43 - I didn't take many because if you've seen one Glock, you've seen them all.

The beveled impact block makes it easier to slide backwards due to the beveled edges. Several other manufacturers used similar blocks.

Those who will be carrying the concealed 43 may want to exercise regularly. Or, I could paraphrase that to say that anyone who carries a concealed handgun should practice regularly, of course.

My point is that smaller guns require more practice to draw and shoot than larger ones - at least in my experience. I've taken two and sometimes have a bit more trouble getting to grips with the subcompact than I have with some of its bigger brothers. The conundrum is that smaller guns are easier to conceal than larger guns, but harder to hold, draw, and shoot well.

Some people just shoot the bigger guns because they can hold all the fingers and the longer scope radius helps with accuracy. There is also a feeling that larger guns exhibit less recoil than their smaller brethren due to their increased weight.

Either way, if you can draw and shoot 6 rounds of 9mm easily, the 43 is a good candidate for concealed carry. to paraphrase the Beatles, all you need is not love but practice. And I know some of you love to exercise – don't we all?

The last factor you need to address is withdrawal. I mentioned it above, but I want to spend a moment. When you're shooting a 19-ounce 9mm with a target load, it's not a big deal. However, switch to your load of choice and suddenly that hunk of plastic and metal takes on a personality of its own, a sometimes unpleasant one. Some small guns can be fast.

Now, 9mm isn't usually as aggressive on the rear end as, say, .40 S&V or .45 ACP, but open defense 9mm can still be a handful, especially if you're sensitive to recoil. I've found that starting shooting my favorite 9mm target out of hand with 4.8 grains of Long Shot powder in a Lee 124-grain cast roundnose, primed with a Fiocchi SP primer, is a good way to start adjusting to the recoil.

Gradual transition to the factory FMJ round and then to the open defense with a full barrel has worked for me and others in the past. I'm not particularly sensitive to recoil, but it seems that the older I get, the more it bothers me. So I always go up for a lighter load on the wrist. I will touch more on my actual experience with this gun and the recoil when shooting it (below).

I brave the weather in the wild background. A cold front is moving in and it's a little nasty, but the urge to take this little guy overcame my reluctance. I shoot the aforementioned handloader which is usually pretty accurate in any gun I shoot, as well as the excellent 124 grain Fiocchi JHP. I got lucky with that opening too.

My hand was disappointed with this gun which was a bit of a surprise, but the Fiocchi wasn't great. Here's the target.

Vertical streaking is noticeable, although this is usually more common in rifles than pistols. Anyway, all the holes are in the paper. It's just not like my ammo. And, yes, that's a bunch of bullets. I put a lot of rounds through my Glock 30 in .45 ACP. As long as you clean the barrel regularly, you shouldn't have any problems.

I can't officially sanction the use of lead bullets due to Glock policy, but hard cast bullets are usually not the culprit. Do not shoot lead blanks in multi-rifle rifles. The bullet will dislodge the lead and create a mess that can lead to an overpressure situation.

For that matter, the same thing can happen with conventional oil barrels. Avoid blank lead bullets if you can, unless you're shooting light targets, and don't shoot them in Glock barrels. I just said take the solid layer, then clean it. Only you can decide what type of bullets to put in your Glock.

The carrying capacity of the JHP is another story. He hit quite hard and lifted the gun from the bag with each shot. Now I shoot a lot of full .44 Magnums and use it for recoil. I'm just making a subjective comparison between the two 9mm loads. You can tell you hit something a little harder than the 1000 fps target load when I put the Fiocchi down.

Looking at the target, it looks like I have two groups: one in the center of the target and one slightly to the left. Interesting to say the least. I used a mount that put the front sight just inside the little black box and shot about 20 yards from the bag.

I often tell myself, to carry an effective load, you have to kick it
