The Ruger Precision Rifle, or RPR, is based on the action of its inexpensive Ruger American bolt-action rifle. RPR uses the same three-layer coating, but the similarities end there. The RPR has a cold rolled chromoly steel barrel and is available in 20", 22" and 2" barrel lengths. The barrel is equipped with a Luger hybrid muzzle brake, which reduces the noise and impact of the shooter while reducing the amount of fire. Community shooters who have been on the receiving end of the muzzle brake without considering blast reduction will appreciate the RPR's signature reduction.
The basic Ruger Precision Rifle in .308 Winchester is 42.75 inches long with an extended stock, 3 inches wide and 7.3 inches high. The rifle can fold the stock laterally, reducing its length to an impressive 31.6 inches. The rifle weighs 9.8 lbs, or just under 13 lbs with the bipod attached.
RPR was first introduced in the .308 Winchester, one of the most successful shooters, followed by the 6.5 Creedmoor. More recently, Ruger has expanded its line to include longer bores including the 6mm Creedmoor, .300 Winchester Magnum and the largest .338 Lapua Magnum. Each gun comes with a 10 round Magpul magazine. To appeal to real shooters who probably know what a buzz is all about, Ruger designed the RPR to accept industry standard Accuracy International magazines.
The RPR is clearly aimed at appealing to AR-15 rifle enthusiasts interested in precision shooting. The rifle looks like an AR weapon, with an aluminum handguard with M-LOK system. A full Picatinny rail runs along the top of the upper for adding a rifle scope, and the mounting angle has been installed 20 minutes to adjust for shooting at longer distances.

Other user-friendly features include a pistol grip that can be replaced with one of the many AR-15 pistol grips. The stock is attached to an AR-style safety tube (although the bolt-on design does not use the safety and reservoir), allowing the shooter to mount it and is compatible with a variety of ARs. The overall design of the Ruger Precision Rifle resembles a rifled chassis or "barrel gun". The barrel is aligned with the stock, and the bolt goes back into the stock. This keeps the trigger in line with the shooter and makes the rifle handle more like an AR rifle than a muzzleloader. Shooters using the AR15 series or large format AR will feel right at home with the RPR.
Most bolt-action rifles come with a well-positioned stock. This leads to all the creative ways to fix products and shooters. Usually there are foam and tape fitters on the end, like a gun recovering from a horrible skiing accident. This is not an RPR issue. The Ruger® MSR Stock is equipped with a combination lever and thumbscrew for quick adjustment of the length of the drawbar and upper comb. It's easy to load the tool into almost any shooter. The product also uses QD attachment points and Picatinny rails underneath.
Ruger made a very smart move when designing the stock. Instead of making it a permanent part of the rifle, Ruger used a standard AR15 style receiver extension. This means the end user can replace the stock stock with any AR15 stock on the market. The same goes for the pistol grip, which is a standard AR15 style part.
Ruger also shows that it understands that we are serious shooters who often travel with guns. To make this a little easier, Ruger added a folding mechanism to the gun mount. At the touch of a button, the butt drops to the left, significantly shortening the length of the rifle. Changing the stock to a different AR15 style stock will not remove this functionality. When unfolded, the folded product locks securely with no noticeable movement. The folding design was acceptable when trying to fit a 24" barrel rifle into the back of my Subaru Crosstrek without folding the seat. This will save the shooter a few dollars when renting a car at the destination. It won't be an "SUV only" issue.
